An article on Redbyrne Potteries, Shepparton written by Robert Waterson has just been added to Australian Potters’ Marks. Rob and his wife Dawn established the pottery in 1975 and it continued in operation until 2002. The pottery site at 225 Old Dookie Road is about to be developed for housing and Rob wanted to make sure that there was a record of the artistic endeavour that had flourished there for three decades. The majority of the items made at the pottery have a characteristic red-brown glaze which Rob tells us was made up of two glazes – a glossy saturated iron glaze applied first with a matt rutile glaze applied over. Items are impressed ‘Redbyrne Potteries Shepparton’ and from the 1980s onwards, the mark also includes the individual potter’s name.

Hello I have collected quite a bit of the pottery, I recently aquired 4 canisters with lids
Unfortunately one has a repaired crack and chips on the rest the pots are in good condition
I wasn’t aware the pottery had closed
As I’m trying to see if any lids are available or someone who could make some

Posted by Michelle Burton | August 15, 2013, 12:37 pmSorry Michelle, don’t know where you will get a lid.We did a great trade making lids for other people’s pots,as nobody likes doing this as the shrinkage rate from wet to fired is difficult to measure. Cheers Rob.W.

Some have your signature and I particularly care for these. Glad to see you adding to the ‘potters marks’ as I have a lot of Australian pieces, collected over many years, and so often I have forgotten the maker or the pottery.

Posted by Robert waterson | December 17, 2014, 6:46 amI have a bread crock and lid I am sure I bought at Redbyrne Pottery around 1996 but it does not have a mark or signature. We even had to get a replacement crock when a builder broke the first one. Were ” seconds” available at all, without the marks?

Most in perfect condition. Is anyone interested in purchasing this?

Posted by Cristin | February 20, 2016, 11:55 pmRob I have 2 pieces of pottery that were in April 1985 with some symbol on the front like a popes hat and a shield. one piece was yours which was a plate and the other is a vase with Gilbert Buchanan and I have been told these are rare but nobody can tell me what they represent.or the value.

I have a 8 peace dinner set with candle holders s/pepper milk jug teacups sugar bowle with the most beautiful teapot and coffee pot.Then there the kitchen canisters spaghetti holder herb & spicy jars and pickle bowls and egg cups. I have had such pleasure over the years using it in my home. I never grow tired of it and always wanted to add to my collection but never got around to it. Just like to say thank you for being so creative and making something so special i can pass on to my daughter. Thank you very much Mr Waterson.
